Chitwan

A visit to Chitwan reveals an unexpected side to Nepal yet an attractive proposition for nature lovers. Located on the terai at the fringe of the Indian plains, the national park boasts diverse forest with magnificent wildlife experiences. The Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian Rhinoceros, Gharial, Langur, Rhesus, Macaque Monkey are some of them.

    1. Elephant Breeding Center
      South of the Royal Chitwan National Park headquarters, the Elephant Breeding Centre is worth a visit in the morning and afternoon when the elephants have returned from grazing in the park (10am to 4pm).
    2. Camel Safari
      Camel Safari is exclusively provided by Chitwan National Park in the heart of Park. You can enjoy a sunset view and a trip around the river banks and Tharu community village.
    3. Chitwan National Park
      Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal. Formerly called Royal Chitwan National Park, it was established in 1973 and granted the status of a World Heritage Site in 1984. It covers an area of 932 km2 (360 sq mi) and is located in the subtropical Inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal in the Chitwan District. In altitude it ranges from about 100 m (330 ft) in the river valleys to 815 m (2,674 ft) in the Churia Hills.
    4. Tharu Cultural Museum
      There’s a tiny Tharu Cultural Museum in Harnari, Chitwan. It is one of the best villages to get a taste of Tharu culture. It has displays of ornaments and a whiskey (locally known as rakshi) distillery pot. If it’s closed, ask around and someone will open it up.
    5. Sauraha
      Sauraha is a village in Chitwan District of Nepal situated close by the Rapti River and the Chitwan National Park. It is the eastern gateway to Chitwan National Park and jungle safaris for budget, mid-priced and 3-4 star tourists. Beginning literally as small and very quaint Tharu village of mud and daub huts and houses, with a half dozen mud and daub hotels, it has grown into a small quiet town full of western style hotels and resorts, restaurants, internet cafes, and gift shops.
